Lectures in your Library

This Spring, DCU in the Community, Dublin Northwest Partnership and the Finglas and Ballymun libraries will be working in partnership to bring ‘Lectures in Your Library’ to the local community. This pilot programme looks to bring university-style lectures to the community in the comfort of their local library. Lectures in your Library will take place from 5 March 2025 to 21 May 2025.

Graphic of man learning at a library for the Lectures in your Library programme

Lectures in Your Library is a completely free programme open to the community; including those passionate about learning and interested in exploring returning to education, to participate in university-style lectures delivered by DCU academics. This 12-week programme consists of 1 session per week, taking place on Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm. The subjects include Politics, Psychology and Media. Each subject will be explored over 4 weeks, consisting of 4 interactive lectures.

It is recognised that further education and considering returning to education can be stressful. This programme aims to provide a stress free and easily accessible environment for everyone to enjoy learning. To do this, there are no exams or tests as part of this programme. This initiative will provide an environment where the community may engage with university-style education and, if they wish, learn of potential pathways and supports if they were to consider returning to education. Participants are expected to attend all 12 weeks as the subjects’ content offer participants the opportunity to discuss, debate and learn about people, events and the workings of modern society. As it is a joint initiative, the first 6 weeks will take place in Finglas library and the second 6 weeks will take place in Ballymun Library.

Subject Details for Lectures

These lectures will explore the way political scientists discuss what politics is, why it is important, and how it operates at a theoretical level. Participants will learn to recognise and utilise the skills and tools needed to analyse political situations.

Psychology, delivered by Dr. Orla Mooney of DCU’s School of Psychology.

Dr. Mooney will be delivering an introduction to psychology series which will include; exploring various psychological perspectives, delving into social psychology and presenting the subject of clinical psychology. This introductory series will present students with the opportunity to enter into discussions and debates and explore the human mind.
